The Madness Behind Anti-Gay Laws

Earlier this week, Arizona governor Jan Brewer vetoed Senate Bill 1062, as seen in this article. The bill would have allowed businesses to deny service to gay or lesbian customers. The article shows Brewer’s opinion and reasoning behind vetoing the bill.  Jan Brewer explained that she understands that “long-held norms about marriage and family are being challenged” but she sincerely believes the bill “has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve.”  While many citizens wanted the bill to be vetoed, some claimed that by vetoing the bill, beliefs of religious citizens are being harmed.

Although traditional family and marriage ideas have been challenged recently, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be changed.  Allowing businesses to deny services to gay citizens, or any citizens, seems immoral to me.  It is contradictory that people believe by vetoing the bill, religious beliefs aren’t being respected, when it is disrespectful to deny services to any customer for such an illogical reason.

Throughout most of the country, homosexual citizens are being denied the right to marry.  The practice of two people joining together has nothing to do with gender or sexuality, only love, and does not harm or infringe upon the rights and beliefs of the religious. Athiests are allowed to marry, so why shouldn’t homosexual couples be allowed to marry?

While marriage once only occurred between the walls of churches, more recent marriages have held place in all different locations and marriage licenses are signed in government buildings.  Having a separation of church and state is in the constitution, there is no reason why gay marriage should be illegal in the United States.

Brewer made a great decision when she decided to veto the bill.  Had the bill been passed, Arizona’s citizens would have divided into groups of those who approved the bill and those who didn’t.

In my opinion, if dogs ran the government no one would be denied services by businesses for any reason.
